Days 103–104: Beautiful Windhoek—modern, clean & green (and very German)

April 26, 2017 1 Comment 4315 Views

We’ve had two wonderfully relaxing rest days in Windhoek. What a beautiful modern, clean & green city in an absolutely stunning setting surrounded by rolling hills and blessed with a benign climate!

Highlights on my end:

  • Chilling for hours at the Craft Café inside the Craft Center—great food, great service, fast Internet, nice ambience

  • Strolling through the streets of Windhoek

Independence Avenue with German style houses
  • Joining a big group of riders for Joe’s Beerhouse, a famous restaurant that looks like a fusion of a Bavarian beerhouse and an Austrian après-ski hut, with its German food menu complemented by African game. Thanks Mike for organizing!

  • Doing some sightseeing, such as the historic train station . . .

  • . . . or the Christuskirche that reminds of a gingerbread house.

  • Being surprised by all the German street signs all over Windhoek, as well as marvelling at all the posh (though mostly gated) villas

  • Treating myself to a luxurious though affordable pedicure at the Hilton spa, and enjoying the beautiful Hilton rooftop with stunning views all over Windhoek while waiting for my appointment

  • Caffeinating at Slowtown Coffee Roasters on Independence Avenue

  • Girls’ night at Ocean Basket with Anmei, E.A., Justyna (new sectional rider living in Zurich!), Liz and Marie

LET ME HELP YOU EXPLORE AFRICA

I found my purpose while cycling through Africa: To help you too experience the beauty of this continent and the warmth of its people – safely and responsibly.

At Fair Voyage, we partner with local sustainability leaders to curate socially and environmentally responsible travel experiences. You get personal travel advice directly from local experts and tailor-made trips crafted just for you. Tell us your trip ideas to speak to your advisor today.

Before cycling through Africa, I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, became aware of the exploitation of porters working on the mountain, and wrote the book Kilimanjaro Uncovered.

Appalled by the continuing exploitation of human life in travel, I partnered with the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) and volunteered with them as advisor and board member to help make a difference.

At Fair Voyage, we treat our porters fairly, which also leads to a safer and more enjoyable experience for our travelers. See what our travelers say.
